Choucha camp. Tunisia 2011
Refugee camp Choucha at the Tunisian- Libyan border accommodates over 4000 migrants workers who fled from war-torn Libya. Main responsibility for the camp rest on UNHCR- UN Refugee Agency. Hard conditions in the camp: lack of drinkable water, poor quality food, lack of security and no perspective to leave the camp lead to violent riots on 23rd and 24th May 2011. Desperate African refugees have blocked the road to the crossing border point. Tunisian army and fierce locals rushed to push refugees back to the camp. Shots were fired. Tunisian security forces turned violent also towards journalists who were present on site at this time.
